When using an HP printer, you may have encountered the non-HP chip detected error. This error usually occurs when you use third-party toner cartridges. In order to restrict customers from using third-party toner cartridges, HP printers usually prevent printers from recognizing third-party toner cartridges by upgrading the firmware version. In this blog, we will provide a detailed introduction to the definition of this issue and the reasons for the occurrence of non-HP chip detected. In addition, we will also provide some specific methods to bypass non-HP chip detected to help you use your HP printer smoothly.

What is Non-HP Chip Detected
Non-HP chip detected error is a consumable verification prompt for HP printers. The core is that the HP printer can identify whether the chip in the currently installed printer cartridge is an original one through the collaboration of its hardware and software. Once the printer detects that the chip is not originally produced by HP, it will trigger a reminder and restriction function. But if the compatible printer cartridge you purchased is the latest version, it has usually been adjusted accordingly for printers with upgraded firmware, and non-HP detection errors typically do not occur.
In fact, most of the original printing consumables of HP printers are equipped with dedicated chips, which store key data such as the model and capacity of the consumables. When the printer is turned on or printing consumables are replaced, it will automatically read the chip data and compare it with the original data. To maximize its own profits, HP often releases firmware upgrades to rewrite the data of HP printers, thereby restricting the use of third-party toner cartridges. In response to firmware upgrades, third-party printer cartridge manufacturers often regularly update their own chip data to fit HP printers.
In short, this non-HP chip detected error is essentially the result of HP’s consumable verification mechanism at work, with the aim of distinguishing between genuine and third-party printing consumables to ensure greater profits and security.
The Reasons for the Non-HP Chip Detected
The core reason why the printer triggers the non-HP chip detected error is that the chip data does not match the printer’s verification logic. Specifically, it can be divided into four types of causes:
1. Chip Incompatibility
Compared with the original chips of HP, chips from third-party manufacturers may not be recognized by HP printers. The main reason for this problem is that the chips used in third-party printer cartridges may not be compatible with the HP printer firmware.
2. Printer Firmware Updates
HP often optimizes printer performance through firmware updates (mostly automatically pushed) and may upgrade consumable verification logic (such as updating the original chip database). If the user does not turn off automatic updates, a third-party chip that was originally functioning properly may be detected as a non-HP chip after the firmware upgrade due to its inability to match the new verification logic. Usually, third-party printer cartridge manufacturers regularly update the data of their chips to be compatible with HP printers after firmware upgrades.
3. Insufficient Compatibility of Printing Consumables
Different models of HP printers have different requirements for the hardware interface and data protocol of the chip. Some third-party manufacturers adopt the design of universal consumables to cover more models.
This design has both advantages and disadvantages. If it has not undergone strict compatibility testing, the printer will determine that the chip on the printing consumable is not an HP chip because it cannot read the chip data normally.
4. The Fault of the Printer Detection Module
In a few cases, non-HP chip detected error is not a chip issue but rather a malfunction of the printer’s own chip detection module, which leads to a misjudgment of non-HP chip even if the original chip is installed.
This kind of situation is usually accompanied by other abnormalities, such as frequent paper jams during printing and garbled characters displayed on the screen.
How to Bypass Non-HP Chip Detected
1. Reuse OEM Chips on Non-HP Ink/Toner Cartridges
You can bypass non-HP chip detected by reusing OEM chips on non-HP ink or toner cartridges. If you are using True Image DIY printer cartridges (such as HP 215A, HP 218A/218X, HP 148A/148X, and HP 48A/58X), you will receive an easy-to-use chip removal tool and specific operation instructions. You can follow the instructions and use the tools to transfer OEM chips from used HP cartridges to our compatible printer cartridges.
The specific operations are as follows:
1. Remove your used HP cartridge from printer and unpack our DIY cartridge.
2. Reset the toner chip removal tool (chip recycle drill) by unscrewing it’s handle counter clockwise 3-5 times.
3. Install the chip recycle drill on where the OEM toner chip is located. When the drill is installed in place, you will hear a clear snap sound.
4. Screw the drill handle clockwise 6-8 times until the OEM chip is loosened.
5. Remove the OEM chip from your used HP cartridge by hands or tweezers included.
6. Check the status of the OEM chip. If there is residual plastic or glue on the back or around it, use another tool (diagonal cutting pliers) to remove it.
7. Insert the OEM chip into the chip slot on our DIY cartridge. Make sure the chip orientation is correct. If you are not sure, please refer to our instructions or video.
8. Install our DIY cartridge with the reused OEM chip into your printer and confirm that your printer recognizes it.
9. Reset the chip recycle drill by unscrewing it’s handle counter clockwise 6-8 times. Then remove the drill from your used HP cartridge and keep all tools out of the reach of children for future use.
Here is a specific operation video (taking the replacement of chips for HP 148A 148X as an example):

2. Use Firmware-Safe Ink/Toner Cartridges
Firmware-Safe technology is an advanced technology that allows compatible ink and toner cartridges to be used with HP+ printers (-e models) and remain compatible and functional with HP printers even after the printer undergoes firmware updates. If you don’t want to replace the chip by yourself, then you can purchase the firmware-safe ink/toner cartridge. These versions of the product come with original chips and can be compatible with printers. Even if the printer is upgraded, there is no need to worry about error reports. Besides, the prices of these products are also very friendly.
True Image offers many compatible HP ink and toner cartridges equipped with Firmware-Safe technology, such as HP 902XL ink cartridges, HP 910XL ink cartridges, and HP 952XL ink cartridges.

3. Install Compatible Ink/Toner Cartridges with New Chips
After HP upgrading firmware, third-party manufacturers will quickly develop new chips to make their printer cartridges compatible with the printers. Once the printer cartridge with the new chip is installed, the non-HP chip detected error will disappear. Therefore, installing reliable compatible printer cartridge with a new chip is a good way to solve this problem. At True Image, if you encounter the non-HP detected error, you can contact our customer service team to request a free replacement cartridge with the latest chip.
4. Downgrade the Printer Firmware
If a third-party chip cannot be used due to the firmware update of the printer, you can restore compatibility by downgrading the printer firmware. You can download the old version from the HP official website or other reliable websites. Download and save the old firmware in advance, which can prevent the inability to find the old firmware for downgrading in the future. We also provide links to old printer firmware for some printers in this section, which you can download as required.
Here is the specific operating procedure:
- Make sure your printer is connected to Wi-Fi or wired network.
- Adjust the following settings in the printer menu to make your printer allow downgrade. In the “Manage Updates” menu, touch the “Allow Downgrade” button and then select “Yes”. Also, do not forget to touch the “Allow Updates” button and then select “Yes”.

- Download an old HP printer firmware to your Windows computer or Mac.
- Send the old version of HP printer firmware from your device to the printer.
On Windows Computer:
After the old firmware is downloaded and saved on your computer, double-click on the file and then select your printer from the drop down menu. Once the printer is selected, click the "Send Firmware" button. Sending the old firmware to your HP printer takes about two minutes. After the progress is completed, click the Exit button. Then the printer will automatically restart after the firmware downgrade.

On Mac:
a. Double-click on the firmware file. The first time to run the firmware file will trigger a system security pop-up notice, press “OK” to close it.

5. Disable the Automatic Upgrade
Disabling the automatic upgrade can effectively prevent your HP printer from encountering non-HP chip detected error. After the printer firmware is downgraded, you also need to disable the automatic update to prevent the recurrence of non-HP chip detected error.
Here are the steps to disable the HP printer firmware update for inkjet printers:
- Turn on the printer.
- Slide down the printer control panel to open the dashboard.
- Click “Setup” icon on the top left corner.
- Scroll down to click “Printer Maintenance”.
- Scroll down to click “Update the Printer”.

6. Purchase Original HP Ink/Toner Cartridges
The main purpose of non-HP chip detection errors is to get customers to choose original HP printer cartridges. Therefore, the simplest and most direct way to eliminate the non-HP chip detected error is to purchase original HP ink/toner cartridge. However, most of the original ink/toner is very expensive. Although buying original HP ink/toner can save you a lot of operations and ensure smooth printing, it will cost you a lot of money.
7. Seek Technical Support from HP (for the Fault of the Printer Detection Module)
If you are using the original HP ink/toner cartridge but still occur the non-HP chip detected error, and there are many problems (such as paper jam, screen garbled, etc.) during the printing process, it may be a problem with your printer detection module. In fact, this kind of situation rarely occurs. But when you unfortunately encounter such a situation, you can seek technical support from HP. And most HP printers come with a one-year warranty.
FAQs about Bypassing Non-HP Chip Detected
1. Is it safe to replace OEM chips with non-HP ink/toner cartridges
Yes. As long as you follow the correct operation steps carefully, the entire process will be very safe. You can effectively bypass the non-chip detected error through this method.
2. Will using compatible ink/toner with new chips void my printer warranty
Since original HP cartridges are incredibly expensive, many printer users switch to affordable 3rd-party ones. In order to force printer users to buy original HP cartridges, printer manufacturers have taken various means. And claiming the printer warranty will be voided is one of its means. But the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits this behavior. Using compatible HP ink/toner will not void your printer warranty, unless the printer malfunction is caused by using compatible printer cartridges.
Conclusion
This non-HP chip detected error does cause problems for you, making your printing work hard to proceed smoothly. But through the above-mentioned methods, you can effectively bypass this problem. Hope you have a smooth printing experience.
