How to Replace Toner in Brother Printer

Timely replacement of toner cartridges ensures consistent high-quality printing from your Brother printer. In this blog, we’ll go over how to replace toner in Brother printer and answer some frequently asked questions.

I. When Should I Replace My Brother Toner?

When your Brother toner cartridge needs replacing, there are usually several signs:

Poor Print Quality: If you notice a decrease in print quality, such as faded text and blank lines on printed pages, you may need to replace the toner cartridge.

Error Message: Many Brother printers will display an error message such as "Replace Toner" or "Toner Low" when the toner is low. These warnings indicate it's time to prepare for replacement.

LED Light: Some Brother printers without a touch screen have an LED light near the toner cartridge slot. When the cartridge is low, the LED will flash red or remain lit, indicating that it needs to be replaced.

Printer Software: The Brother printer software on your computer can monitor toner levels and sound an alert when a specific toner cartridge is low.

In Brother laser printers, the toner cartridge and drum unit are separate components. The toner cartridge holds the toner powder, and the printer drum is responsible for transferring the toner to the paper.

Other printer brands such as HP and Canon integrate the photosensitive drum into the toner cartridge. The Brother printer is just the opposite, allowing the cartridge and drum to be replaced separately. The drum unit is usually replaced after two to three toner cartridges. Therefore, we only need to replace the toner cartridge when your printer drum has not used up the number of printed pages.

II. How to Replace the Toner In a Brother Printer

Let us take the replacement of Brother TN-760 toner cartridge as an example.

Prepare Your Printer

Turn off the printer and wait about 5-6 minutes for its internal parts to cool. Then open the front cover to take out the cartridge.

Remove the Cartridge Assembly

Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly from your Brother printer. Then place it on a stable surface with a protective layer underneath to avoid any damage.

Separate Toner Cartridge from Drum Unit

Release the toner cartridge from the drum unit by pressing down on the green locking levers and gently pulling them apart.

Prepare the New Toner Cartridge

Unpack the new Brother TN760 toner cartridge. Shake it horizontally 5-6 times to distribute the toner evenly. Then remove the protective cover and orange tab from the cartridge.

Install New Toner Cartridge

Gently slide the new TN760 into the drum unit. At this time, the green locking lever automatically rises to secure the ink cartridge in place. Sliding the green tab back and forth 2-3 times to clean the corona wire inside the drum unit. This helps remove dust and maintain print quality.

Reinstall the Cartridge Assembly

Finally, put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the printer and close the front cover.
