Why Is My HP Printer Power Light Blinking?

If you notice your HP printer power light blinking erratically when you're ready to print, this is a common problem. Your HP printer is trying to tell you something, and in most cases, you can resolve it yourself. In this blog post, we'll help you understand why your HP printer power light is blinking and introduce some practical solutions.

I. What Different Blinking Patterns Mean?

HP printers use blinking lights as error codes:

A slow blink (once every two seconds) often means sleep mode. That is not a real problem.

A fast blink (two or more times per second) signals an active error. An orange or amber blink warns about paper or ink. A white blink may mean a stuck print job.

Sometimes, the power button on HP printers flashes erratically, which usually indicates a communication failure. For example, the HP LaserJet M255dw flashes rapidly when the door is open; the HP DeskJet 2755 flashes orange when there is a paper jam; and the HP ENVY 6050 flashes white when ink is low.

II. How to Fix HP Printer Power Light Blinking?

1. Basic Checks

First, try restarting your printer. Unplug your printer's power cord and wait 60 seconds. Then plug it back into the power outlet. Next, unplug all USB and Ethernet cables. Test only the power connection.

Does the power indicator light on your HP printer stop flashing? If it does, the problem is with the power cord. Also check the power cord for damage, such as cuts, bends, or burn marks.

Alternatively, you can try using the power cord from another HP printer. Many HP printer models use the same power cord. Finally, check the back of the printer to ensure the vents are not blocked by debris. Overheating can also cause the indicator light to flash.

2. Clear the Print Queue

Print job jams are one of the main causes of printer flashing. Your computer keeps sending data, but the printer can't process it. Therefore, the power button indicator on your HP printer keeps flashing.

Here is how to clear the queue on Windows:

  • Open "Devices and Printers".

  • Right-click your HP printer.

  • Select "See what's printing".

  • Click "Printer" in the top menu.

  • Choose "Cancel All Documents".

  • Wait a few seconds.

Do the same on macOS:

  • Go to "System Settings," then "Printers & Scanners."

  • Select your HP printer.

  • Click "Print Queue".

  • Cancel every job listed.

Then restart the printer. The HP printer's power indicator light should stay on. The blog post How to Check Printer Queue provides detailed instructions. If the light is still flashing, proceed to the next step.

3. Check If There Is a Paper Jam

Paper jams don't always display an error screen. Sometimes, only the HP printer's power indicator light flashing will appear. You must check all possible points of paper jam.

First, open the paper tray. Slowly remove all paper. Check inside for any small pieces of torn paper. Second, open the rear access door. This is a common location where paper jams are hidden. Third, check under the ink cartridge or toner cartridge tray.

For LaserJet models like the HP M283fdw, pull out the toner cartridge. For DeskJet models like the 4155e, gently move the tray. Only operate by hand. Never use metal tools. Using a small flashlight can help you see better.

Remove all found pieces of paper. Then close all doors. Restart the printer. The indicator light flashing may stop immediately. Refer to our paper jam guide How to Fix Epson Printer Paper Jam for more information.

4. Check for Low or Depleted Toner or Ink

Low ink supply will cause the power indicator light to flash. HP printers will treat this as a warning.

Open the ink cartridge compartment door. Remove the ink cartridges one by one. Check the new cartridges for any remaining protective tape. This tape can obstruct electrical connections. Then firmly reinstall each cartridge into place. You should hear a slight click.

For color printers like the HP M283cdw, check all four cartridges. An empty cartridge can also cause the indicator light to flash. You can replace any depleted cartridge with a genuine HP cartridge or a high-quality compatible cartridge.

Note: Sometimes, when using compatible cartridges, third-party cartridges may be rejected. This rejection can also cause the indicator light to flash. This could be the reason if you have just changed your cartridge brand. Therefore, we strongly recommend using trusted third-party brand cartridges or ink; suppliers with over ten years of experience, such as True Image, are your best bet.

5. Reset Your HP Printer

A full reset can resolve many flickering issues. Resets have three levels:

Soft Reset: Turn off the printer. Unplug the power cord. Wait 60 seconds. Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.

Hard Reset/Factory Reset: This will erase all custom settings. For HP LaserJet models, go to the Settings menu. Locate Services and select Restore Defaults. For HP DeskJet or ENVY models, use the HP Smart app. Locate Printer Settings and select Reset.

A factory reset can often resolve persistent flickering issues. However, you will lose Wi-Fi settings and custom presets. Therefore, this should only be done after other methods have failed. Read the blog How to Reset HP Printer for more information.

6. Reinstall Printer Firmware

Firmware corruption can cause the power indicator light to flash. This might sound complicated, but you can try it with confidence.

First, download the latest firmware from the HP support website. Search for your exact model (e.g., HP M255dw). Save the file to a USB flash drive. Please use a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32.

Then turn off the printer. Insert the USB flash drive into the printer's port. Turn on the printer. The printer should automatically detect the file. Follow the on-screen instructions. Do not turn off the power during this process. Power failure can damage the printer.

If the USB flash drive method fails, use the HP Smart app. Connect via USB or Wi-Fi. Go to "Printer Update" and follow the prompts. The flashing should usually stop after the update is complete. This method can also resolve the "Why is my HP printer power button flashing?" problem that reappears after a reset.

7. Potential Hardware Failure

If all methods fail, it's likely a hardware failure. Common problems include power supply and main circuit board malfunctions. Listen for unusual sounds, such as clicking or buzzing. Smell for a burnt odor from electronic components. Both signs indicate internal damage.

Additionally, visit the HP website to check your warranty status. Enter the serial number from the printer label. If it's under warranty, HP will repair it free of charge. If it's out of warranty, compare repair costs with the cost of buying a new printer.

A new HP M255dw costs approximately $350. Repair costs can range from $150 to $250. Sometimes replacing the printer is more cost-effective. You can also disassemble the damaged printer and sell the parts. In any case, don't ignore a continuously flashing indicator light. It rarely goes away on its own.

Ⅲ. The Bottom Line

A flashing power indicator light is not a fatal malfunction. In most cases, the cause is simple and can be resolved without additional cost. Restart your printer, check for hidden paper jams, check ink or toner levels, and even reset the printer. Finally, if none of the above methods work, reinstall the firmware. Only consider hardware failure if all of the above methods fail.
